Remote

remote4
While on what was to have been a routine reconnaisance mission, Major Blunder found himself hopelessly lost when the guidance system failed on his F-3487and3/4 Intergalactic Fighter. Nearly out of fuel, and needing to go to the bathroom REALLY badly, he made his way to the only solid ground within range. When he finally emerged from the cramped cockpit of his broken ship, he found himself on a strange, remote planet. The first thing on his mind was "I gotta take a leak". The second thing was "I wish I could paint happy trees like Bob".

Below is v3.0; same as above but without the RGB video projectors beaming across space. Don't know why I didn't think of that earlier on...oh well, better late than never, I suppose.

Below is v 2.0 (same as above but without the bazillion inch TV)

Below is the first version...

These were done digitally with a combination of photos (the remote controls), Bryce4 for the basic planets, mountains, sky, etc., and Photoshop (CS2) and a Wacom tablet for the details, type, etc. The intergalactic fighter plane, the Major Blunder figure, and the other drawn elements were invented.

OOOHHH WOW I don't see where it needs more work .... Also like your second 'cold' edition below! The planets look spectacular as does the rest :)

I hope any "fixes" come with more of the story. Nice idea on the theme, Rick. It is like an old sci-fi novel cover.

This has a very interesting look already! I can only guess that It'll get better yet.

Thanks for the comments, guys.
Inki, don't know if I'll embellish the story, but I did think about making it look like a Sci-fi comic from the 50's. Maybe that's just what I'll do.

Captain Blunder, you say? He certainly looks very well equipped for any emergency and it looks like he might be heading for one. This is fascinating!!

But what I want to know is what do the remotes control? Time, space, climate, brains...?

Rick Lovell said...

Tony-
You're right...a remote planet needs something to control, so I added an entertainment system, complete with a VERY widescreen TV. Of course, the inhabitants of this desolate planet constantly lament the fact that there are no "happy trees" in their world.

Hmmm... Like you have time for this -
I was tagged, and had to write 20 facts about myself. Now I 'm supposed to do the same. I’ve tagged you to write 20 things about yourself

Rick, this is sensational - sign me up as a Major Blunder fan! Those RBG video projectors in the first one are very pretty and also kind of cheesy (in a good way), but maybe they make the place look a little too lively and less remote. I think number 3 might be my favourite. Your composition sense is fantastic - I love the way all the perspective elements (the ship, buildings, etc.) pull us into the Major's viewpoint. And I thought the bathroom was built into the suit :). Thanks for your comment on mine - you really got what I was striving for!

Ian-
You're absolutely right about the video projectors; they're too cheesy and ruin the retro vibe that was happening in #3. But, whatthehay, this is for experimentation and we learn as much from our mistakes as from our successes, so I'm leaving #4 up and see if it can take the embarrassment of being second best.
(btw, Major Blunder's suit is equipped with a "relief bladder", but after he polished off that "Quantum Gulp" back at the rest stop on the edge of the HorseHead Nebula, the thing was about to overflow...I know we've all been THERE before!)
