Envy

envy

I chose to look at the subject of envy as a paradox. In this piece it's difficult to know who is envious of whom; it depends upon your point of view. It was done with acrylics, oils and colored pencils, with a little tweaking in Photoshop.

You're obviously very talented and skilled artistically. I look forward to seeing more of your work. Do you prefer to work in traditional mediums and then tweak digitally or ...?

I’m not a purist. I use whatever means necessary to achieve the look that I’m after, and sometimes that means all traditional, or all digital, or some combination.

I worked exclusively as an airbrush illustrator for years, but since I’ve been teaching I’ve had the opportunity to learn and use many different techniques. This envy piece is a hybrid technique that incorporates many different drawing and painting media, and I chose to make a few adjustments to the final piece after it was scanned.

I liked it the first time I saw. And I still like it.

At first I thought Whoa.. major dejavu (spellcheck) but then I found "you" again at number 53, I believe. Nice to know no one is borrowing the work of others.

I know it is confusing. I posted the first two times to my regular website, but then I thought it would be nice to set up a blog for this kind of thing so I could get feedback from people like you. Thanks for the kind words.

this is fabulous...I love the concept of them both being envious; not being able to tell who is the envious one.

At first I thought this was taken from a book(it looked THAT good). I see what you mean about the pic. The lion may envy the freedom or size of the mouse( a mouse is harder to see in the wild). The mouse may envy the safety( in the cage) or strength of the lion.

Dynamite-

You pretty much got it. I see it this way: the mouse envy's the lion...he wishes he could be big, ferocious, and respected as the "King of Beasts". The lion, on the other hand, would gladly trade all of his power in order to regain his freedom, so he is the one who is most envious of the other.
