Free...variations on a theme

The good
liberty
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

The bad
OJ
Free, but why?

The ugly

Free (for the moment)

Your images are all very American orientated so I will comment that you have been VERY busy with your submission this week, triple so -and say that on the whole I love the textures in all three, especially the clouds in the first :)

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I've been busy, but the theme is so rich with potential images that I could have done many more.
Sorry for the very American imagery, but it's where I am from, and the idea of freedom is the foundation upon which my country is built. For those many IF participants who are not American, the two portraits depict sports celebrities who were charged with extremely heinous crimes such as murder and rape, yet they remain free despite overwhelming evidence that they committed those crimes.
I usually work with traditional media or Photoshop, but I decided to play with Painter 9 this time. I used several combinations of brushes and other effects to make these images, but I'm still searching for that perfect look that "feels" like real paint. Maybe I need to open a can of turpentine so I can at least experience the smell of real oils.

Very good hand at painting. An all American take on the topic and very well done. Excellent portraits, too.

Great paintings that beg some thoughtful answers and introspection.

This is brilliant, Rick! Your technique and talents are always oustanding, but this time you really hit me with your commentary as well. Good on!
