Empty

empty-nest
This image came to me immediately when I learned the theme was "empty". I did a few quick sketches in my usual realistic style and it just didn't work. So, I tried this simplified vector style, and it seems to have the right feel for this image.

I like the your sad birds and the cracked egg. It reminds me of the last summer "our" mourning doves nested on the airconditioner outside the kitchen. A hawk came and destroyed the nest, and I even witnessed it flying away with a little bird. Oh...it was horrible! Needless to say, they never returned.

This illustration is much simpler that the others you've shared here, but it's perfect for the subject matter. I see you've added color to your aging illustrations - they look great. I notice that in the top one (the "before" pic), the colors are deeper and the tip of your nose looks sunburnt. The "after" rendition is paler, your eyes look a little narrower, and the red has moved more to be around the stitches. Your work is amazing!

Thanks, ladies. Carla, I'm trying to make myself experiment with a different style for every Illustration Friday post. It keeps me on my toes and makes me experiment with techniques I might not have tackled, otherwise. Although this birdie post is WAY different from my usual style, I have to admit it was kind of fun...and so fast...something my more realistic style is not.

Who knew two birds could be so sad? Reminds me of difficult times and empty arms.

Such a perfect picture - nicely done as usual. It was the EXACT thing I had in my brain as my second idea...right down to the color of the birds. So I linked to your picture on my post. Oh Rick, your color rendering of your aging sketches are breathtaking. Greay work!

It's wonderfully done. It leaves me feleing just slightly sad.

Nicely done, Mr. Lovell. I like the combo of styles (nest vs. branch vs. birds). Try the eye-twinkles as sharp-edged vectors, too. Or mebbe not there at all.

But who am I talking to? Your site is a treat!
